| MAKING NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS STICK
At this time of year many of us make our New Year's Resolutions. What often happens is that soon after many of the goals we set become forgotten. Cummings Jewish Centre for Seniors member Ruth Eliesen knows all about this however this time she is determined to make them stick.
Eliesen has been involved with CJCS for a number of years and has set some ambitious goals which include getting into better shape. “This is not an exciting story,” she said. “I simply want to reach certain goals for myself, by quitting smoking, exercising more and losing weight.”
Eliesen made her resolution at the end of 2009 and so far she has been consistent. With the support of the Workout Studio at the Cummings Jewish Centre for Seniors, Eliesen has been coming out three times a week to exercise. “It is not easy but after my workout I feel terrific,” she added. “That is motivating for me.”
The Wellness Centre at CJCS offers a wide range of fitness classes ranging from aerobics to Zumba to gentle gym. Its workout studio features state of the art equipment for a total body workout. For more information call 514-342-1234.

THE BENEFITS OF EXERCISING KEEP GROWING |
The benefits of having an active lifestyle are well known. Exercise, weight maintenance and healthy eating habits are some of the suggestions put forward by most health care professionals that aim to enhance a person's well-being. Now some research has taken this one step further and is suggesting that exercise during middle age may benefit those who are diagnosed with Dementia and Alzheimer's. Although there is no known cure, exercise as a preventative measure to stop or slow the onset of dementia is increasingly becoming the subject of scholarly research.
Sheila Fried's 92 year old mother Dyna Dalfen has Alzheimer's disease and her participation in the Workout Studio at the Cummings Jewish Centre for Seniors is making an important difference in her life. “When I told my mother's doctor that she exercises twice a week, the response was that the exercise may be more beneficial than the medication she is taking. You cannot prevent Alzheimer's nor can you cure it, what you can do with exercise is improve one's quality of life”, said Fried.
Fried notes that her mother has been exercising for a number of years and now, along with some assistance, is able to get out to the Cummings Centre twice a week to participate in activities in a community setting.
Sandra Benjamin, a fitness instructor and personal trainer, notes that if you don't use it, you may lose it. She has been working with Dyna Dalfen and notes some of the advantages of working out in a community setting such as in the Workout Studio of the Cummings Centre. “You get to know people here who in turn provide words of encouragement,” said Benjamin, recognizing that you not only benefit from exercising but from the social component. “They all know Dyna here and she acknowledges them. This interaction can be very motivating and further engages the participant.”

WOMEN'S HEALTHY HEART INITIATIVE
Heart disease is the major cause of death for Canadian women. The WHHI is a nurse led clinic providing women with access to specialized nurses and cardiologists working collaboratively to provide the professional treatment and resource counseling women need, but presently lack, to reduce their modifiable risks of heart disease. These known risks are hyperlipidemia, hypertension diabetes, obesity, physical inactivity and smoking. Our primary target population is the “ill well” woman-the woman who is 45-65 years old, is presently well but at high risk of heart disease and requires medical and lifestyle interventions to reduce her risk of heart disease.
The participants will have their individual risk of heart disease assessed and then receive intensive evidence-based treatment, information, support and follow up during regular monthly appointments and telephone calls. The reality is that women have inadequate access to the resources they need to decrease their risk of heart disease. The goal of the MUHC Women's Healthy Heart Initiative is to fill that accessibility gap.
Join Wendy Wray RN on Tuesday, February 23,7:30-9 pm at the Hampton Inn & Suites, 1900 Trans Canada HWY. Contact Ellen Tock 514.624.5005 local 230 or ellen.tock@cummingscentre.org
